A great Marathi movie, Huppa Huiya is full of laughter and drama. The story revolves around a little seven-year-old girl who is too busy with her studies to take care of her aged grandmother. When the old woman's illness worsens, she has to find a way to balance work and family life in order to save her grandma from a miserable death in the hospital. The movie shows how the old woman teaches her granddaughter lessons about life and living through difficult times with humor and optimism. In many ways, this film is not much different from other Marathi movies because it shows their culture, traditions, values and beliefs without being patronizing or preachy. The movie provides an insight into the way of life in India and allows the viewer to experience the same emotions and reactions as the actors. Despite its fanciful plot, this film is very realistic because it intersperses family drama with dark moments of heartbreak and death. The movie successfully shows how people in developing countries like India make do with less, while keeping their sense of humor. This Marathi movie also won two Filmfare Awards; one for Best Film, another for Best Actress (Rajshri Deshpande). It was first published in 'Janmabhoomi' magazine before being released as a book. After completing the shooting in 14 days, the movie released on 25 August 2006. It had good opening at number one position in Mumbai and Bangalore box office, but due to heavy competition it could not do well at single screens. The movie collected 2 crores at box office in this weekend which is low than expected so its total collection is 3.2 crores. Total business of the film is 4 crores, after adjusting for prints and advertising costs, which is lower than expectations. Although the movie did not do well, critics had appreciated it. It is said that the movie does not shy away from some unflattering truths of life, while remaining light-hearted.The film was "Thacker's choice", (Thacker's choice award is given by Thacker School of Engineering).
